Post-Covid City Breaks to Soak Up Some Culture

The UK has a roadmap out of lockdown, which means holidays are once again on the horizon. While the idea of going on a busy city break might not seem like an ideal adventure right now, it won’t be long before we’re exploring museums, restaurants and landmarks once again.

To get you in the mood for your next city adventure, we’ve put together a list of the enchanting cities more than worth a visit. As much as we love London, Paris and Amsterdam, our picks feature the not-so-obvious places that should definitely be on your travel wish-list post Covid. ✈️

Medellín, Colombia 🇨🇴

Notorious for its association with Pablo Escobar, Medellin went from the most dangerous city on earth to an in-demand holiday hotspot. With one of the fastest-growing economies on the continent, the city effortlessly blends lush green forests with big-city buzz and a natural sense of calm throughout.

It’s full of creativity and was even referred to as “the most innovative city” in the world by the Urban Land Institute. El Poblado with its lively bars and parks is one of the most-visited neighbourhoods, while Comuna 13 was once a district ridden with crime and murder but has since transformed into a tourist hotspot with plenty of colour, music and hospitality.

Tallinn, Estonia 🇪🇪

Fairy-tale charm awaits you in Tallinn, which is the capital of Estonia and one of Europe’s most recent hotspots. After a significant boom in the 21st century, people flock here from all over the world to soak up the lively atmosphere, stunning architecture and local hospitality.

The UNESCO-listed Old Town is a must-see site with its cobbled streets and preserved medieval architecture. There are restaurants to sample, museums to visit, galleries to admire and bars to lose many hours in when you soak up the city of Tallinn.

Dusseldorf, Germany 🇩🇪

Primarily known as a city for business, Dusseldorf has seen a growth in tourism over the years and is full of charm for you to admire. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in Canary Wharf when you visit the docks, thanks to the impressive skyscrapers that dominate the skyline. But head into the centre and the atmosphere changes considerably.

Well-laid-out roads feature five-star boutiques and a pleasant river flows in-between the main shopping street. There are some great places to go for a peaceful walk along the Rhine river, too, including cobbled streets with quaint houses.

Seville, Spain 🇪🇸

Everyone talks about coastal areas or Madrid when Spain crops up in the conversation, but Seville is a city well worth your time – even if it doesn’t have a beach. There’s old-world glamour with Moorish town squares and religious processions and cobbled streets to discover.

Seville is definitely an Instagram-friendly city with contemporary art, food and fashion mixed in with its historic appeal. Make sure you visit the Royal Alcazar of Seville, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and royal palace previously built for Christian king Peter of Castile.

New Orleans, USA 🇺🇸

Who needs the 24-7 buzz of New York or the A-list life in Los Angeles when you can visit New Orleans? Influenced by an array of cultures, New Orleans is a melting pot of vibrancy, friendliness and music with a sprinkling of tasty gourmet Creole cuisine.

Visit the old French Quarter, which forms the city’s historic heart. Also known as the Vieux Carre, the French Quarter is a party and food hotspot where you can spend hours dancing, sampling tasty food and embracing the locals in one of the USA’s most unique cities.

Freetown Christiania, Denmark 🇩🇰

A city within a city, Freetown Christiania is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Located within Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, Freetown Christiania is a hippie hotspot with a population of just 900 people and a no-car rule.

Known for its Green Light District, where you could once buy all types of marijuana, things have since changed, and today Freetown Christiania is a thriving community that sees visits from plenty of tourists. Enjoy the culture, eat at the local restaurants and bars and visit a place like no other in Denmark.

Eilat, Israel 🇮🇱

Most people think of Tel-Aviv when it comes to visiting Israel, but Eilat is a place where the desert meets the sea and a favourite spot for a city break with a beach. The weather is always pleasant, and you’ll spend most of your days here lazing on the soft sands.

There are also plenty of great restaurants to sample, as well as places to shop and museums to visit if you feel like venturing further afield. But it’s really all about the beach life in Eilat, don’t feel too guilty if you spend most of your days catching some rays.

Ljubljana, Slovenia 🇸🇮

Another Eastern European delight, Ljubljana is one of Europe’s greenest cities and a great place to visit. Stroll around the pedestrianised streets and admire the medieval architecture that gives the capital of Slovakia so much of its charm.

It’s set on the banks of the Ljubljanica River and features the Ljubljana Castle. Head here to take in the design and witness impressive views over the city. Then spend some time in the graffiti-laden Metelkova district, which is the place to be for entertainment and nightlife.
