Who said two’s company? Though we do agree that three can be a crowd. As nice as it can be going on holiday with others – whether it’s friends, family or loved ones – sometimes you need to do a spot of jet setting on your own and enjoy a solo getaway. But where should you pack your bags and visit? We’ve got the best countries to explore solo with our list. So read on and find out which holiday destination you should visit on your own.
Stockholm, Sweden 🇸🇪

The capital of Sweden is spread across 14 islands, connected by bridges and features a charming cobblestone old town, plus scenic river walks and tranquil parks. Being a Scandinavian city, Stockholm also offers ease and simplicity with its layout and everyone speaks English too. So if you’re a solo traveller from the UK, getting around should be a piece of cake – even if you get lost and need to ask the locals for directions.
Havana, Cuba 🇨🇺

Once upon a time, the idea of visiting Cuba was all but a dream, as the country was closed off to tourism. Today, however, the country has changed dramatically since opening up for tourism. Head to Havana and sample the backstreet restaurants, artisan shops and classic 1950s charm that can still be found around the city.
New Zealand 🇳🇿

New Zealand and Australia are notoriously known as hotspots for solo travellers, especially among the backpacking community. If we had to choose one over the other, New Zealand lands our vote (though it was close). That’s because it has stunning outdoor adventures to try, incredibly friendly locals and breathtaking landscapes. What’s not to love?
South America 🇧🇷 🇦🇷 🇵🇪 🇨🇴 🇧🇴

If you’re after an adventure, why not do the whole of South America and visit the many amazing countries? It’s a great destination for adventurers, with mountains to climb in Argentina, rivers to raft in Peru, jungles to explore in Colombia and beaches to laze on in Brazil. Ok, so that last one isn’t as adventurous, but you’ll need a break after all the other high-octane activities.
Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦

Combine a city break with an outdoorsy holiday in Toronto, a civilised and friendly city in Canada. It’s a bit like New York but without the chaos and more open space. One minute you’re walking around the city with dominating buildings; the next, you’re hopping on a boat and enjoying a walk in nature on Toronto Park Island with its quiet beaches and green areas. And then there’s Niagara Falls, which is a little over an hour’s drive away.
Kenya 🇰🇪

A diverse ecosystem and reputation for elephants, black rhinos, buffalo, lions and leopards make Kenya the place to go for a solo safari. Join a big group and make new friends during your trip, or arrange for a guide to take you out into the great outdoors alone. Away from the safari, Kenya has good infrastructure and great cities like Nairobi, where you can enjoy a lively city with entertainment at every corner.
Switzerland 🇨🇭

We couldn’t pick just one city in Switzerland, and with its excellent rail connections, you’re better off purchasing a train ticket to see the whole country. Doing so means you’ll get the best of its cities like Zurich and Geneva and sweeping countryside with lush greens everywhere you look. And let’s not forget about the domineering mountains perched in the background. Why not hop on a train or hike to the Alps and partake in a spot of skiing?
Ubud, Indonesia 🇮🇩

Find your inner zen with a visit to Ubud in Indonesia, which is Bali’s artistic and spiritual centre and a fantastic place for solo travellers to reflect and relax. Recharge your batteries among emerald rice fields and misty mountains, then check into one of the health retreats that surround the beautiful nature of Ubud.
New York, United States 🗽

Start spreading the news… to yourself as you head to the Big Apple alone. New York is a great place for solo travel, as there’s so much to do and see, and you don’t need to argue with anyone over the itinerary. So go and visit the Empire State Building, watch a show on Broadway and wander the streets while soaking up that quintessential New York atmosphere.
Barcelona, Spain 🇪🇸

Another jam-packed city finds its way onto the list, and Barcelona is a great place where solo travellers can experience a vibrant atmosphere with beautiful beaches. Wander around and stop by the cafe-lined boulevards while doing a spot of people watching, explore the sites from Gaudi before getting around on the super convenient public transport system and heading to one of the beaches to enjoy soft sands and clear waters.
Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪

Loads of solo tourists flock to Berlin to experience the city’s unique culture. That’s because people are drawn to its reputation as one of the friendliest and most inclusive cities in Europe – you’ll be made to feel welcome here wherever you arrive from. While in Berlin, go on tours and admire street art, sample the many pubs and quirky cafes, take in the city’s history at Brandenburg Gate and head to the infamous Berghain, Berlin’s notorious nightclub that you’re more likely to gain entry to if you arrive alone.
